Dolomites - July 2004

This was an Exodus Multi Activity Holiday based on Cortina D'Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites. We were a minimum group, just four of us. The others were Alastair Reynolds, David Nicolson, and Kevin North. The week was filled with plenty of 'activity'.

From the hotel

We stayed at the Hotel Trieste, good rooms, and this was the view from the balcony
.. or this

Day 1 - Via Ferrata

This is the start
Al is already happy
Up the iron way
More via ferrata
Keep on upwards
Pause for breath
There's an iron ladder next
This is the top
Lunch with guide Franco
Cortina view as we descend

Day 2 - Mountain Biking

View from the road - we went down some of the scree (centre picture) yesterday
Cortina, below
Biking man
Break for a waterfall. We walk underneath it.
Guide Bruno risks life and limb (to let down a draw-bridge !)
Dave in contemplative mood
Al in playful mood on a mini ferrata
Proof that we had bikes, across the meadow and back to Cortina

Day 3 - Canyoning

This is the gear, but too wet for any more pictures

Day 4 morning - The Adventure Park

One of many gravity slides. Dave shows how it's done
Kevin takes a walk in the tree tops
Kevin on the scramble net after Tarzan's leap
That's Dave zipping by
Kevin still walking in the tree tops
That's Dave zipping by

Day 4 afternoon - Next it's white water rafting

These guys look so well behaved, but it's the only picture I'm going to get. Definitely too wet for photos.

Day 5 - No taxi-bob, no hydro-speed, so we opt for more mountain biking

We start on the old railway line
Biking man
They still look so well-behaved, well it's a late lunch
Great views as we get back down in the valley
Al passes at speed
Cortina from the meadows

Day 6 morning - Tyrolean Traverse

That's the needle, and Paulo up to something at the base
Kevin climbs to the launch point
Al, or is it Dave, climbs to the launch point
View of the valley below
I hope it is all secure. Franco makes final adjustments.
I think I am meant to let go
I thought he was meant to pull me across
Well, it gives me time to look down !
This is the abseiling bit, Paulo is last down.
That's where it was, the bit with straight edges, just right of centre.
Safely down - lunch from another spot with a view

Day 6 afternoon - A last walk

The river Boite flowing through Cortina is full of Dolomite colour
View of Cortina from the the South West
Pocol, above Cortina, is a war memorial site
Onwards and upwards. I think that ass is care-taking the sheep.
The path is unusually crowded
Nature has the last say - the hills were full of cowslips.
